Introduction

There are so many different ways in which ports and adapters are used in systems, before you add or replace a hose or tube, you'll need to correctly identify it by using the following guide.

Form, angle, diameter, and pitch are the common characteristics used by manufacturers to create product codes numbers. ASME B1.1 and ISO 261 are examples. Several of the groups responsible for coming up with these code numbers are the American Society of Manufacturing Engineers, American Standards Institute, International Organization for Standardization, SAE International, British Association, and Deutsches Institutionalization fur Normung.

Fluid port and connector identification tools

Calipers
are used to measure inner/outer thread diameters.

Thread Pitch Guages are used to determine threads per inch, and measuring thread-to-thread spacing for metric connections.


Accurate measurement of threads

Be sure the threads of your fluid pipe or tube are in good condition previous to measuring. You will not get correct measurements with worn or distorted threads. Once you are sure that the threads are in good conditions, use an I.D./O.D. caliper, or something similar, to measure and record, matching dimensions with those in this guide.

There may be slight inconsistencies between your measurements and those in this guide, due to manufacturing tolerances.

Once you measure the diameter of the threads, measure their spacing, in threads per inch. (For metric connections, determine the thread to thread distances.) For the best accuracy, be sure the thread pitch gauge fits precisely on the threads. Once the measurements are recorded, compare to those in this guide.


Accurate measurement of four-bolt flanges

Use a caliper to measure the port hole diameter of the bolt. After noting that measurement, determine the distance from the center to center of the bolt holes, and record the farthest spacing.

Dash numbers
Abbreviated numbers commonly used to describe the sizes of tubes and fluid pipes, generally used when ordering. The numerator part of the fraction is only used, while the denominator (16), is ignored. For example, size -8 equates to 8/16" or 1/2". Note that dash numbers are nominal.

Metric measurements give actual sizes of a tube or a fluid pipe, and dash numbers do not apply. For example, M12x1.0 has outside thread diameter of 12 mm, and a spacing of 1.0 mm between threads.





American Connections

National Pipe Tapered Fuel (NPTF)

A dryseal thread, where the male thread connects with the female and creates a seal when the two are compressed together (e.g. threads deformation). Teflon and pipe dope can be applied if further sealing is required. The National Fluid Power Association (NFPA) does not recommend this connection for hydraulic applications, even though you will see this connection used often in fluid piping systems.

While the NPTF connector and BSPT connector appear similar, they cannot replace each other.

National Pipe straight mechanical (NPSM)

The male connector has a 300 internal chamfer and the female has an inverted 300 seat. Both male and female have straight threads. A mechanically strong and leak resistant joint is created when both halves are threaded together. They are commonly found in fluid power systems.

Note that an NPSM female can create a seal with a chamfered NPTF male.

JIC 37° Flare (SAE J514)

This connection is commonly found in hydraulic systems. The male and female both have a 37º flare seat and straight threads, and their flare seats seal when they are threaded together. The connection is mechanically bound together by the straight threads of the both halves.

Note that although the SAE J514 and SAE 45º flare threads are the same, their seating angles are different.

SAE 45° Flare (SAE J512)

These connections are typically used in low pressure situations like refrigerant and fuel lines, as well as vehicle piping systems. The male and female connectors both have a 45° flare seat, and both halves thread together to form a strong mechanical bond. The seal is made on the 45° flare seat.

Note: Other than their seat angles, the SAE 45° Flare connectors are the same as JIC 37° Flare connectors.

SAE Straight Thread O-ring (O-Ring Boss)

SAE J1926-1 and ISO 11296-1

The male O-Ring Boss has an O-ring, the female port has a sealing face, and a chamfer. Both have a straight thread. The O-ring is squeezed into the chamfer to create the seal. The threads of both halves connect together to create a strong mechanical bond, and are commonly found in high pressure hydraulic systems.

Flareless Compression (SAE J514)

The male half has a 240 seat with a straight thread, while the female has a compression sleeve with a straight thread. Along with the sleeve, a female nut and a tube help make part of the female connection. On the male, the seal forms between the 24O seat and the compression sleeve. On the female, the seal forms between the tubing and the compression sleeve. The threads mesh to create a strong mechanical bond.

O-Ring Face Seal (SAE J1453)

This connection offers a very good leak resistance and can be used in situations up to 6000 psi.The male half has an O-ring, and the female half has a flat surface, while both have straight thread. A seal is created when the O-ring in the face of the male is squeezed onto the smooth flat surface female seat. The swivel female nut holds the connection together.

SAE Inverted Flare (SAE J512)

This connection if often found in the automotive industry. A machined male connector has a 420 seat, and a flared male tube has a 450 seat. The female side of the inverted flare has a 420 seat for a sealing surface. Threads connect tightly to create a mechanical connection.

Four-Bolt Flange (SAE J518 and ISO 6162)

Suitable for connecting 1/2" to 3" hoses and tubings, and is commonly found in fluid power applications. The seal is created between the O-ring (seated on the ring groove of the male),and the smooth surface on the female port. The connection is held in place with 4 bolts and and 2 clamps.


The SAE J518 flanges come in two pressure groups: standard (code 61), and high pressure (code 62).

O-Ring Pilot Threads

The O-Ring Pilot Threads connection is commonly used in vehicle and commercial air conditioning systems. The male and female ends have a pilot and a seal is formed when the O-ring is compressed. The pilot can either be long or short. Threads engage to form a mechanically strong connection.

British Standard Pipe

British connectors come in in two categories: British Standard Pipe Parallel (BSPP), and British Standard Pipe Tapered (BSPT).


British Standard Pipe Parallel (BSPP)

The BSPP male half has a 300 seat, and mates with the tapered nose of the female swivel.

Note: Even though the male end of the BSPP and the American National Pipe Straight Mechanical (NPSM) male are alike, they are not compatible due to the pitches of their threads.

ISO 6149 Metric Port and Stud Ends

ISO 261 threads & O-ring seal

The male half of the ISO 6149 connection has an O-ring, while the female has a smooth surface, and a chamfer. Both have straight threads. The O-ring on the male connector compresses to mate with the chamfer of the female half. The straight threads mesh to form a tight mechanical bond.

Note: While the ISO 6149 and the SAE J1926-1O-ring Boss are alike, the ISO 6149 has metric threads.

Japanese Industrial Standard JIS 300 Flare

The male half of this connection has a 30° seat, the female has a 300 seat, and both halves have straight threads.This connection is similar to 37° Flare. While this connection looks like the American 37° Flare, it's 30° seat and BSPP-type thread dimensions set it apart .

This connection, with a 30° Flare and parallel metric threads, is commonly found on Komatsu equipment. The JIS metric connection and JIS 300 flare are alike, but the JIS 300 has BSPP-type thread dimensions.
